An Intro

At OneRoom we recognise the value in the people and places around us in the borough we call home. As children of the borough, we are direct reflections of a widely shared desire to make the most of the cards we have been dealt in order to provide the opportunity for those who might follow our footsteps, and empower them to go further and spread their wings even wider. To make this desire a reality, we recognise that support structures must be purpose built and reflective of those we hope to provide this support too. By providing these opportunities, alternative pathways become more realistically attainable by those who may be at risk/ vulnerable to criminal activity or influences.

With this in mind, we would like to create what we call a Creative Learning Experience which will provide young people of the borough with the opportunity to gain skills from practitioners who live and or work in the borough. This allows us to begin a circular economy of knowledge sharing which will ultimately have a positive effect on those gaining new skills and also help to incentives the retention of skilled practitioners within our borough.

Why Visual Creativity?

With the news of the new film studios being introduced to the area, we are aware of the potential opportunity to create access points within our communities.

By introducing these skill to young people, we hope to greatly increate the likelihood that they may be able to develop and eventually apply their newly gained skill base here within the changing landscape of the borough. Roles as videographers, photographers and potentially directors become vastly more attainable if path ways to those roles are introduced and encouraged as early as possible.

Why Digital Design?

With the growth of the online world and the scope therein, skills such as graphic design and animation are becoming increasingly sought after. From the creation of assets for businesses ranging from the entertainment world to the cooperate world, and even the cryptocurrency world with the emergence of technologies such as NFT's.

By introducing young people in the borough to the world of digital design we hope to encourage the boundless potential for creation and self expression through a medium that can also be developed into a well grounded skill set.

Why Textiles?

With the rise of fast fashion, we believe that the challenge to resist the cycle of waste is one that we should all accept in any way we can. Through the sharing of skills that demonstrate things such as up-cycling, regeneration and original creations, we believe that young people will have a greater opportunity to affect their personal economy with a sense of agency.

With support, textile skills can provide an outlet for expression and can also provide the potential for a directly increase in the earning potential of young people in the borough. Industries ranging from fashion to stage and costume design can be made more accessible, helping those career path to become more viable options for our young people.

The Journey Continues

Through these creative learning experiences, we hope to share the joy of making and creating new things. We believe that when young people enjoy the work that they're engaged in, they are more likely to be committed to their own progress and develop a sense of pride in their work.

Here at OneRoom, we believe that this sense of pride along with a knowledge of local role models and support systems in line with their interests, can result in an increased and sustainable desire to learn and grow new skill sets which will only help to improve the earning potential of people around us in the places we call home.
