THE COZY FILM CLUB

January 2024

“I don’t know what I like more; watching the movie together, the interesting conversations that follow, or the snacks! :p”

Context

The recent development of two local films studios right here in Barking and Dagenham (B&D for short) came as an interesting and welcomed surprise to many local residents. These new additions to the borough inspired a desire to explore a larger variety of stylistic storytelling. They also presented the opportunity to explore some less commonly shared narratives and perspectives.

Through my work in participatory project design, I have had the joy of experiencing how comfortable spaces and shared perspective can contribute to a less polarised community. Through the sharing of resources we create space to recognise our shared need and desires. Through this continued low interaction, we can begin to recognise the humanity we share too.

In response to these reflections, I decided to start The Cozy Film Club.

Project

In January 2024, I partnered with a local B&D based creative collective called One Room Live. Together we were able to produce a series of movie nights and screenings with the intention of exploring a variety of perspectives on the black experience - outside of the crime, drugs and slavery movies that seem to receive pride of place more often than not.

Using One Room Live’s multi use creative studio, we were able to create a cozy and comfortable environment and provide snacks as part of each guests ticket.

Challenges

As inclusivity is one of my personal priorities, our main challenge was to maintain an affordable price point, while unfunded. Although there is a requirement for resourcing, I was very resistant to place that burden solely on attendees.

Unfortunately it was not possible to produce these screening as free event while still unfunded. Eventually we had to accept the need to sell tickets, however, we chose to price tickets at £2.50 to remain as accessible as possible. This price point did not and does not cover the entire running cost and we are very grateful to the volunteers (Aji, Geraldine, Jerry & Junior) who supported and continue to support this project.
